Orthodontic Appliances
Everyone deserves a beautiful smile. Overbites, overcrowded teeth, and other problems can be detrimental to the functioning bite and long-term oral health.
Our certified specialists in Orthodontics, at PDG Dental, can evaluate when to begin orthodontic treatment to give your child the most beautiful and healthy smile for the rest of their life.
Early or Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment
It’s recommended that children see an orthodontist for their first Orthodontic around the age of 7. Focusing on structural jaw issues like underbites and overbites, crowding or protruding teeth are easier to correct at a younger age while children are still growing. This is considered “phase 1” or “early treatment.” Proactive early treatment can make phase 2 treatment more predictable, easier to complete, and potentially shorter in length.

Full or Phase 2 Orthodontic Treatment
This stage of treatment usually occurs when all the permanent teeth (except wisdom teeth) are present in the mouth. There are a few options available to consider for this stage: Metal or clear braces and Invisalign. There may be other appliances required depending on your needs.

Traditional Metal Braces
Braces are attached to the teeth via archwires and elastics that apply light, steady, and continuous pressure to your teeth in order to slowly and safely straighten them. We use Dentsply GAC In-Ovation Systems, offering metal and clear braces. Traditional metal braces are the most economical option, best for partial and full orthodontic treatment, and can be personalized with coloured bands to make it more exciting for kids.

Invisalign
Invisalign, a more modern way of straightening teeth without the use of wires or metal brackets! The nearly invisible plastic mouth guard-like aligners are custom made to gradually and gently shift teeth into their desired place. These aligners are easily removable and allow the user to eat and drink whatever they want. It is a perfect choice for those who want to achieve a great smile with the least noticeable solution. Invisalign is more applicable for teen or adult treatment plans as they require more responsibility from the patient to ensure consistency of use.

What is Invisalign?
Your Invisalign treatment starts by mapping your teeth to allow your orthodontist to formulate a personalized treatment plan. The mapping is done through a fast and precise digital scan done in the clinic. You’ll even get to preview your new smile!
From this, a series of customized aligners will be made that will gradually move your teeth to the pre-determined positions as you progress through the stages. You will change aligners every few weeks as instructed by your doctor.
After you achieve your new smile, as with other orthodontic treatments, it is recommended that you wear a retainer so that your smile is maintained and your teeth do not move out of alignment.
Invisalign For Teens And Adults
Invisalign is a great option for teens and adults to get their smiles on track. Various issues can be treated with Invisalign, such as overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite, crowded teeth, gap teeth and simply getting a straighter smile.
The aligners should be worn for 20-22 hours every day to get the desired results. You’ll only take your aligners to eat and brush. In most cases, you’ll be required to visit your orthodontist every 6 weeks or so to allow us to monitor your progress and make modifications as needed.
Every two weeks you’ll get a new set of aligners which are easy to replace yourself. You can eat and drink almost anything, and most people will never know you’re wearing orthodontic straighteners.
Invisalign First
Invisalign First was designed specially for the little ones going into Phase 1 treatment. This treatment has the goal of preventing pre-existing issues from getting worse and develop young jaws and/or arches to make room for existing teeth and for incoming permanent teeth. Going through early treatment can make Phase 2 much easier and faster.
Invisalign First is removable, making it easier for children to keep their teeth clean and floss regularly.
It’s also much more comfortable than traditional braces and will hurt their little mouth a lot less.
